Academic writing fails at the level of ideas, not grammar. These seminars teach the intellectual foundations your school never covered: how to argue, how to read, how to synthesize, and how to write in the AI era without losing your voice.
View the Summer Schedule InquireMost students can generate text. Almost none can construct an argument. The gap between producing words and producing ideas has never been wider. It is costing students grades, admissions slots, and intellectual confidence they may never recover.
Students who can generate text but cannot form a thesis. Every professor knows who they are.
Mediocre grades, thin personal statements, and the persistent feeling something is not clicking even when you are working hard.
Students who learn to think clearly in the AI era become extraordinarily rare. That scarcity has real value.
"You are not just learning how to write a paper. You are learning how to think clearly enough to say something that matters."
Live, small-cohort instruction via Zoom. Every session is led by Karmen Michael Smith, no assistants, no pre-recorded content. Tuesdays at 7 PM CT and Saturdays at 9:30 AM CT through August.
Four hours. Everything the college orientation skipped. Thesis writing, academic reading, AI tools, essay structure, and the intellectual confidence to actually compete, covered in a single intensive session for students who chose college on purpose and refuse to waste it.
A limited number of reduced-cost seats are available for each session for students who demonstrate financial need. Write to assistant@poorculture.com before registering.
For students and scholars who need deeper, individualized strategic guidance. This is not editing. It is intellectual translation, and that work is priced to reflect what it actually requires.
Pricing reflects the depth of work required, which depends on where you are when you arrive. All inquiries are assessed individually.
Strategic notes, structural feedback, and argument clarity. This is not copyediting. The work focuses on whether your argument holds, whether your structure serves it, and whether your introduction does what it needs to do.
Price varies based on prior seminar attendance. Students who have completed the Thesis Statement seminar arrive with clearer arguments and require less foundational work.
One round of written strategic notes. No line editing. No rewriting. The work identifies what is costing you and what is working, and gives you the direction to fix it yourself.
Most graduate, law, seminary, social work, and doctoral programs require personal statements between 500 and 1,000 words. Submissions must be within the stated limit of your target program. Documents significantly exceeding program requirements will be returned with structural notes only.
Structure, argument construction, synthesis, framing, and intellectual coherence. Strategic guidance on the architecture of the work from conception through final draft. Not editing.
Engagement scope determined at intake.
Long-arc strategic support for doctoral candidates navigating complex research, writing, and committee dynamics. Offered on a selective basis. Not every applicant will be accepted, because the work requires sustained intellectual partnership, and that has to be the right fit in both directions.
Payment is structured by phase, not by session. Enrollment is by application only. Send a one-paragraph description of your dissertation topic, your program, and where you are in the process.
To inquire about any service, send a brief description of your project, your timeline, and your level of study.
