Designed Fragmentation, Algorithmic Identity,
and the Path Toward Human Coherence
Abstract
I developed the Post-Notification Era framework to name a transition I kept living through before I had language for it: the movement beyond reactive digital life toward intentional, coherent human agency. Attention researchers have spent two decades documenting what happens to sustained focus under constant interruption. Communication scholars have studied how personalization narrows what a person encounters and how platforms convert behavior into a commercial asset. My argument is that these fields are describing facets of a single shift for which Designed Fragmentation, Human Coherence, and Sovereignty offer a shared vocabulary.

A phone buzzes on a table. Somewhere in the half-second between the sound and the glance, something decides who is in charge of the next few minutes. Not the person reaching for the phone. The system that built the buzz.
I have spent the last several years trying to name what happens in that half-second, and what it adds up to across a decade of half-seconds. I call the result Designed Fragmentation: the splitting of attention, identity, and meaning across systems built to interrupt. I call what comes after it the Post-Notification Era — a period defined less by new devices than by a refusal to keep living inside the old ones on their terms. Between those two conditions sit two things I think a person has to build rather than download: Human Coherence, the alignment of attention and action into something that holds together, and Sovereignty, the capacity to govern that attention toward a future the person actually chose.
I did not arrive at these terms in a seminar. I arrived at them the way most people arrive at the truth about their own habits, by noticing something small and refusing to look away from it.
The interruption no longer needs the platform. The platform trained the habit, and the habit now runs on its own.
The word "designed" carries more weight than the evidence can bear if I use it carelessly. I am not claiming that any single engineer sat down and decided to fragment human attention as an end in itself. The narrower claim is that fragmentation is a predictable output of systems whose interfaces and business incentives reward repeated re-engagement and interruption, whether or not fragmenting attention was ever anyone's explicit goal.
A factory does not need to intend smog for smog to be a designed consequence of how it runs. Attention works the same way here.
Attention research gives the mechanism. Once work was interrupted, it took roughly twenty-five minutes on average to resume, passing through more than two other activities before returning to what had been left. Interrupted participants often compensated by working faster — but reported significantly more stress, frustration, effort, and time pressure. Fragmentation does not always cost time in the way people assume. Sometimes it costs something else, a subjective tax paid in stress rather than in minutes.
Average continuous screen focus has fallen from roughly two and a half minutes in the early 2000s to under a minute in more recent measurements. And crucially: people increasingly interrupt themselves even when no notification arrives — a pattern of self-generated fragmentation that outlives the original external trigger.
If fragmentation is what happens to attention, the Algorithmic Age is where fragmentation starts doing something to identity. I do not think this is a metaphor. Feeds, ranking systems, and predictive targeting increasingly decide what a person sees, and what a person sees is not separate from what a person becomes.
Personalization algorithms build a distinct informational world for each user out of click history, location, and inferred preference. That curation, because it operates without the user's full awareness, narrows the range of ideas a person is likely to encounter. I extend that claim further: if the field of possible experience keeps narrowing along the same predictive lines, the field of imaginable selves may narrow with it — because much of what a person becomes starts as something they encountered before they knew to look for it.
Technology companies do not merely observe behavior in order to predict it; they work to shape and modify it, treating human experience as raw material to be extracted and sold. Friction and boredom are not oversights waiting for a future update. They look like exactly the conditions a system built on continuous engagement has the strongest incentive to eliminate — since they are also the conditions under which a person might close the application.
My claim is that the Algorithmic Age has tilted increasingly toward narrowing — and that recovering something like what came before is most of what the Post-Notification Era is asking for.
In controlled experiments, participants who first completed a deliberately tedious task generated more numerous and more creative uses for an everyday object afterward than participants who went straight to the creative task. The explanation was daydreaming: when external stimulation falls away, cognition does not simply idle. It starts generating material on its own.
The coffee shop version of this makes the same point a different way. You cannot search for a conversation you do not know is happening. You had to be standing there with nothing competing for your attention.
A notification does something almost too ordinary to notice: it decides when the next interaction begins. The platform calls. You answer.
Self-Determination Theory holds that human motivation and wellbeing depend on three basic psychological needs: autonomy — the sense of acting from one's own volition; competence — the sense of being effective; and relatedness — genuine connection to others.
Some notification-driven systems frustrate all three needs at once. A feed that repeatedly initiates attention on the platform's schedule can work against autonomy by shifting the timing of engagement away from deliberate choice. Infinite scroll offers little room for competence. And the performance of connection — likes, views, asynchronous messages standing in for sustained presence — can substitute for relatedness without actually delivering it.
Sovereignty, in my sense, is not a matter of discipline. It is a matter of rebuilding an environment where these needs can actually be met instead of continuously, quietly frustrated.
The shift from the Algorithmic Age to the Post-Notification Era is not primarily a test of willpower or a call to abandon technology. It is a design problem at two levels: personal ritual and platform architecture.
At the platform level: transparency about how content is selected, user control over the filtering process, and structural limits on how behavioral data is extracted and used — since voluntary redesign is unlikely to counteract a business model built on maximizing engagement. Recommender systems can be built to optimize for discovery alongside relevance, if a platform chooses to measure and reward it.
At the personal level: discrete device states, protected mornings, walks without headphones, meals without phones on the table — small interventions consistent with what Self-Determination Theory would predict should help. Not limiting screen time through willpower or blanket restriction, but recognizing that a person moves through genuinely different psychological states across a day — waking, moving, creating, connecting, resting — and most technology treats every one of them as interchangeable and equally interruptible.
A platform aligned with Human Coherence would have to treat discovery as a design goal in its own right, sometimes in direct tension with engagement maximization — not as a byproduct it hopes to get for free.
Attention researchers study interruption. Communication scholars study personalization. Motivation psychologists study need satisfaction. Recommender-systems researchers study the trade-off between relevance and discovery. They rarely share a vocabulary, yet they are describing different surfaces of the same transition.
The question asked at the close of a keynote — what kind of human needs to emerge to survive what we have built — was not only rhetorical. On the evidence gathered here, it is a design question with a partial and increasingly documented psychological answer: attention treated as finite and rhythmic rather than infinite, algorithmic convenience weighed against the friction that discovery and intimacy require, discovery built as a target rather than left as an accident, and technology built to support autonomy, competence, and relatedness rather than quietly wear them down in pursuit of one more minute of attention.
